Filming documentaries can be a dream job, but with nightmarish challenges!
Locations can vary wildly: the shoot could be indoors or out, hot or cold, wet or dry, light or dark….the list continues almost without end. When you’re filming camera-shy people or unpredictable wildlife camera support is the last thing that you want to worry about. And all of these challenges assume that you are able to get your equipment to the location in the first place.
So much consideration must be put into the choice of camera support for documentaries. The initial financial outlay is only part of the picture. By going for the “low cost” option, savings may be achieved but these are often at the cost of creativity, adding more cost and time in the edit. The physical limitations of the equipment may restrict what can be produced, or worse still, the opportunity to capture that once in a lifetime picture may be lost, possibly restricting the opportunity for pitching for future productions.
To help you understand and purchase the correct equipment we have produced Vinten’s ‘Essential Guide to Documentary Camera Support’, which is available to download by clicking here.
