Bob wood is a live news truck operator / cameraman for NY1 News, and has been in the role a little over a year. He gives his views on theVision 8 systems he uses on a daily basis.
"We purchased number of new Panasonic DVC Pro50 cameras, they are brand new to the market, so as we got new cameras we decided we needed new supports. We chose the Vision 8’s as they most suited the camera’s and can be used on both tripods and lightweight pedestals in the studio. We used Vinten before, so this new kit of Vision 8’s is basically replacing them."
"When we first got the Vision 8’s through they were very user friendly, compared to some with stepped settings its much easier. I don’t really use the perfect balance feature, I’m an eye type guy, I compensate balance with my own settings and lock off if I need it to be held."
"We concentrate on gathering news, today we are doing a life two hour programme that we have started to do every month, it’s a politics show, with speakers and an audience. We use the Vision 8’s on Vision pedestals in the studio, and the tripods outside and on the shoulder."
"We do have a couple of other manufacturers tripods I know Vintens been around for a long time, and have used them at the previous station where I worked. The reason we chose Vinten is both price and trustworthy of the tripod. As for the tripod itself on a daily basis, a lot of shooters carry these systems around, though it in the trunk , driving is demanding and hard, they get knocked about in the truck. I’ve noticed no problems with their day to day use, they hold up to the job. Previous experience of ground spreaders has not been great, the plastic can be known to become brittle especially when they get in the snow, in the winter time in the north east, its cold and icy, they can break easily . But the Vinten system held up fine last winter."
"All round it’s a great system, the Vision 8’s have lots of great features, one of my favourites is the illuminated level bubble, I work a lot in the night time and its black out there. Previously I had to use a lighter to try and level the head, but it was so awkward, this lit bubble is awesome. The height ranges are very compatible with our usage, we have no need to get any more height than this. We use maybe an apple box (2 ft high) to stand on and use the system at maximum height if we need to."
