CANON & VINTEN COLLABORATE TO MAXIMISE IMAGE-STABLISATION PERFORMANCE DURING HDTV PRODUCTION

07/09/2007

Complementary technology will help eliminate any trace of lag after fast pan or tilt moves

Canon’s DIGISUPER 100AF and DIGISUPER 86AF long-field zoom lenses are world famous for their Optical Shift Image Stabilizer (Shift-IS) technology which capture rock-solid images in crystal-clear HD even at telephoto distances – with the help of Auto Focus, if required. Now the capabilities of these advanced HD lenses have been further maximised by an exclusive technology collaboration between Canon and Vinten, a leading manufacturer of tripods, pedestals, pan and tilt heads and other innovative camera support solutions.

The Canon-Vinten collaboration integrates the advanced capabilities of Canon’s Shift-IS lens technology with the special encoders built into Vinten’s new Vector 950 Active pan and tilt head, and combined with a customized serial controller box, creates the link between the two technologies. The high resolution encoders in the Vector 950 Active system provide the perfect output for compatibility with the new Canon AF lenses.

The result is the elimination of any trace of lag after fast pan or tilt shots – a great advantage in the production of fast paced HDTV sports and live entertainment events.
This new technology addresses some of the key issues of the HDTV market, which requires sharper, more stable pictures.
It is also compression-friendly because it delivers a more stable source image, which minimises the amount of processing required by the encoders to produce the perfect final image for broadcast output.

“This is a very exciting development for the global broadcast industry,” said Joop Janssen, Chief Executive, Broadcast Systems Division, of the Vitec Group, “with two companies – Canon and Vinten – recognised for their pioneering and innovative technology once again taking the industry to a new level of performance with this unique Image Stabilisation System.”

This Vinten – Canon technology collaboration was first seen earlier this year at a number of major US sporting events, where an HD camera, supported by Vinten’s new Vector 950 Active pan and tilt head, fitted with a Canon DIGISUPER 100AF long field HD zoom lens, was successfully used to capture the fast paced action.

“The exclusive technology collaboration between Canon and Vinten takes Canon’s superior Shift IS Image-Stabilizer system and makes it an even greater tool for camera operators when combined with Vinten’s Vector 950 Active head,” said Ken Koyama of Canon Europe.

“The development of this new Image Stabilisation System is just the first in what will be a long and fruitful partnership between Vinten and Canon,” concluded Joop Janssen.
